This artwork is incredible, I wish I had this kind of talent, it really is some of the best I've ever seen.

Uhhh. That's kind of reaching. Man, people are pretty desperate to shit on artists these days.

(I can read a little bit of Spanish, but I'm replying back in English, because my Spanish isn't up to par for this)

But the examples provided are kind of weak. There's tracing outright, but the problem  is with this argument, is that he's using his own style for the references, these are not exact duplicates. If it was black and white, color for color, then yeah, totally, that's a copy. But these are in his style, these aren't copies. The faces aren't the same, the style is not the same. He's using them as refs but adding his own spin on them.

Furthermore, I hate to break it to you guys, but this is actually not an uncommon practice amongst artists/painters. If you're ever in an art program and you have to take painting, an assignment you will encounter is that you have to pick an artist/master painter of your choosing and paint an exact duplicate of a painting of theirs. While it's not something that's readily encouraged and you have art teachers telling you to copy another artist, they do have you copy other master paintings so that you can understand and learn  form, content, composition, etc:

But coming back to my point: There is nothing wrong with using other pictures as references. This isn't tracing, this is someone using references and using his interpretation in his own pieces. I don't see the same thing being said for some of his pieces where he readily says he uses a photo ref. So, why can't an artist use a drawing ref?

The only time it'd be a problem and absolutely problematic if he was copying it detail for detail and... I don't see that, honestly. If anything, a much more worthy criticism would be saying that he's turning into a one trick pony with portraits, alongside Sakimichan. That's more of a problem to me, as an artist, than anything.
